I’ve been playing around with the del.icio.us REST api, wondering if there’s any value for news organizations to add by aggregating certain sets of tags and encouraging their users to get involved in tagging. We could ask people to become ‘Internet Correspondents’ and actively scour the web for local sites and news, attaching them to tags for their towns or regions. We could then build a layer over that to reward people for finding links that prove popular. The ‘related tags’ functionality on del.icio.us isn’t that rich, and I’m sure adding geographical information and other relationships between tags is a way for existing sites and communities of users to give some value back.
If I get some more time to experiment with this (Flickr is fun too, of course) I might bung some stuff up. Does anybody have some examples of sites building extra functionality around services like del.icio.us and Flickr?
Incidentally, a guy called Wayne Barry seems to do a bit of tagging in Kent, and there are some nice photos of Canterbury on Flickr (some of which are of other, equally euonymical, cities around the globe).
